Being In Sync

This last weekend we attended our Engagement Encounter Retreat.  It's held for engaged couples that are getting married in the Catholic Church.  It was a great weekend to communicate and share with each other.  I think we walked away with a renewed sense of what it means to be engaged and mindful of the fact that we are now a "we" and not just a "me".

One of my favorite parts of the weekend was on the first night.  We had to introduce ourselves and tell everyone who we are, our wedding date, and each others most endearing quality.  As I waited for our turn, I wondered what I would say was Hanam's most endearing quality.  I thought about saying he was funny, and that he made me laugh.  Although it is true, I didn't think it was his most endearing quality.  I thought I could say that he always puts my needs first and give me what I want, but was worried I'd sound too spoiled.  Then I thought, come on Laura, how hard can it be to to pick what you love most about Hanam!  After that, it came to me!

Well, it was our turn to share and Hanam introduced us.  We shared when and where we are getting married.  And then, he shared my most endearing quality.  And really, I should have expected this....we gave the same answer.  No joke.

Hanam's most endearing quality is his big heart.  I was attracted to him from the beginning for his love of our faith and his love for his family!   Hanam said that I have a big heart, too.  A big heart to put up with him (I don't see it as putting up with him), and a big heart to love others.

I shouldn't be surprised that we both picked the same quality, but it is nice to know that we are in sync with each other. It shows me that we have similar priorities and it feels like we are connected to each other on multiple levels.  I imagine that, as time goes on, this might happen more often.  Yet, I am aware that our being in sync goes beyond our own abilities.  I prayed for this endearing quality in my future husband long before I met Hanam.  Having a big heart was something that I was looking for and is exactly what God gave me.  So, really, I shouldn't  have been shocked that what I prayed for and found is also what Hanam had prayed for and found .  Answered prayers: I think so!  As for me and Hanam and staying in sync, I haven't given much thought about us being "old and gray" but it would be cute if by the time we got there, we could just read each other's thoughts.

What about you? Is there an endearing quality you are looking for or found in man?

  1. That retreat sounded amazing Laura! You and Hanam are really setting the foundation to a happy and healthy marriage, starting with God! And I can second that about you having a big heart! That's something that I think we all see in you... and Hanam! As for what I am looking for? Well, there's alot! I am just glad that I am figuring that out now! Love you!
